How To Get There

Take the B974 south out of Banchory. After crossing the River Dee take a left over another bridge and then turn immediately right. Follow this minor road for about 2 miles and then turn right. Carry on for about a mile and a half, passing a farm on your right. The circle is in a field to the right, just before you reach "Knock Wood".

This really is the "Big Sister" site of Esslie The Lesser, just down the road. Here is the same overgrown jumble of stones, but on a grander scale and with more impressive uprights.

The circle is around 80 feet in diameter, getting on for twice the size of its neighbour. The disturbed ground in the centre marks the location of the typical (for recumbent stone circles) ring cairn. The recumbent stone is around 5 feet high with the flanking stones not significantly taller.

Both Esslie The Greater and Esslie The Lesser contrast in style with a third nearby circle at Garrol Wood.
