How To Get There

This group of standing stones is situated on Harthill Moor in Derbyshire, not far from the Nine Ladies stone circle. From Bakewell follow the A524 towards Youlgreave. When you reach Alport take the un-signed left turn towards Elton. It's a narrow road with some tight bends, so take care. The stones are about half way along this road, in a field to the east of the road.

Despite the name of this circle only four stones are left standing now, though there were still six left last century. There may once have been nine stones here, though a more likely explanation is that "nine" is a corruption of "noon". Many such monuments have legends associated with them of the stones dancing at mid-day (hence "noon stones" and thus "nine stones"). It is thought that these stones are all that is left of a burial mound. Note the deep grooves cut into the tops of the stones.

Not far away from this site is Robin Hood's Stride (or leap), an interesting rocky outcrop. This is worth exploring if you're going to visit the Nine Stones.
